Glenrose Courage Ride for Rehab
On September 9, 2017 the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation will be undertaking the 2nd Annual Courage Ride for Rehab around Pigeon Lake. In addition to raising funds to support the world-class efforts of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (“GRH”), it will profile and raise awareness of the relationship between the GRH and the YMCA with the Canadian Forces. Together, rehabilitation is provided to the men and women who have so proudly served our country. The Bikeathon is not a race, but a fun event for everyone, from families to avid cyclists, to share a day filled with cycling, inspiration, motivation and showing support for those who need it.
The Canadian Forces Health Services has had a longstanding partnership with the GRH. On June 24, 2011, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre Laurie Hawn (now a GRH Foundation Board member) announced the contribution of the Government of Canada through the Department of National Defense to purchase a state-of-the-art Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN). CAREN creates a safe and controlled therapeutic learning environment for soldiers and civilians requiring physical and mental rehabilitation. The system is used to treat a wide variety of conditions including stroke, amputation, traumatic brain injury, multiple orthopedic trauma, spinal cord injury, postural instability, sports injury, burns and psychiatric disorders such as phobias and PTSD.
The Third Canadian Division support group, located at the Namao base near Edmonton, will have a number of Canadian Forces personnel riding in the Courage Ride for Rehab.
